Working towards a
net zero NHS

A mobile solution for a greener NHS

The Medclair MDU is an innovative solution which collects residual nitrous oxide from exhaled air and subsequently destroys the gas.

  • Mitigates greenhouse gas emissions and provides a safe work environment for N20 users
  • Converts more than 99% of exhaled N2O into harmless Nitrogen and Oxygen
  • Self supporting system with low noise level and minimum energy consumption
  • Mobility combined with ease makes it suitable for various healthcare settings
  • Facilitates a healthy work environment for healthcare professionals and a safer space for patients

A Net Zero NHS

The NHS is responsible for around

0 %
of UK's carbon emissions

Anaesthetic gases
account for

0 %
of NHS carbon emissions

Operating one MDU is potentially equivalent to removing

0
cars from UK roads

A complete mobile solution

BPR Medical’s Ultraflow™ analgesic demand valve creates a closed system for scavenging gases and helps integrate the Medclair MDU technology. Its unique patented exhalation valve diverts contaminated breath away from the handset, virtually eliminating the risk of cross-infection.

Our collaborative approach with Medclair has already supported the UK’s first climate-friendly gas and air labour at Newcastle’s Royal Infirmary in September 2021.

Mitigating nitrous oxide emissions alongside thorough evaluation of how we can reduce our waste is hugely important to us as an organisation. Nitrous oxide, while a safe and clinical useful medicine, has almost 300 times the global warming effect of carbon dioxide and we can’t ignore that. This destruction technology offers us an opportunity to address this issue head on and we look forward to breaking new ground with the mobile units the minute they arrive! Both MedClair and bpr medical have been a huge support throughout this journey and our teams have learned so much already about what this will offer

Dr Emma Evans, Consultant Anaesthetist, St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

By virtually eliminating the production of nitrous oxide in this way, we are creating a safer space for mothers during labour and helping to protect the environment their babies will grow up in

Emma Luhr, Director of Midwifery, Frimley Health NHS Trust Foundation

It’s going to help change the future and it’s going to massively help the environment, not just for ourselves but for future generations as well

Lindsay Craney, First Midwife in UK to deliver gas and air climate-friendly birth at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust

The Ultraflow Demand Valve system will provide effective analgesia and the various lengths and lightweight design will allow women to change position and mobilise more freely and birth how they choose too. The woman will feel more empowered and in control of her labour and birth, whether she is low risk or high risk and inevitably promotes normality overall which is part of the midwives scope of practice”

BPR Medical and Medclair Support UK’s First Climate-Friendly Gas and Air Labour

A Newcastle mum has become the first person in the UK to use climate-friendly pain relief during labour after giving birth at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary. The new mum used BPR Medical’s Ultraflow analgesic demand valve, which was connected to a nitrous oxide capture and destruction system provided by Medclair.

I just came to have my baby – but I started on the traditional machine and then swapped over. It was quieter and much more comfortable to hold”
